MAKING
THE RIGHT CHOICE
So, you have decided
to have cosmetic surgery.
What do you
do next?
It is important that
you get a good advice, clear and easy to understand information about
the procedure and chose a surgeon who fills the criteria set out below:
Training
Surgeons in the UK who train to be a plastic surgeon usually
spend 8 to 10 years within the speciality under supervision, training
in both reconstructive and cosmetic aesthetic surgery. This compared with
training out side the UK which can be as little as 2 years.
FRCS (Fellow
of Royal Collage of Surgeons)
This is a diploma that all aspiring surgeons need to have to
be eligible for training. This does not mean the holder of this diploma
is a specialist in any given field.
FRCS (Plast)
This is a fellowship of all the Royal Colleges of UK and Ireland
in the speciality of PLASTIC SURGERY. This exam is arguably the most comprehensive
in this speciality world wide. This can only be taken after finishing
6 years of exacting, supervised training.
FRCOG
This is the fellowship of the royal collage of obstetricians
and gynaecologists. To achieve this, a gynaecological surgeon first has
to pass a Membership examination and then complete a further 12 years
of experience in the specialty.
Local
Your surgeon should be relatively local to you. He/ she should
be able to attend the hospital in an emergency. Surgeons in some clinics
regularly fly in from one city to another to operate and leave after surgery.
Worse still, some clinics/cosmetic surgery companies allow surgeons to
fly in from overseas for a few days and then leave. While they may have
another surgeon to look after the patient after their surgeon has left,
only your original surgeon is in a position to provide good after care.
BAAPS (British
Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons)
Membership The only “Royal Collage” accredited association
of aesthetic cosmetic surgeons. There are strict criteria for membership.
These are in place to protect the patient and have a high standard of
training and care. Only fully trained Aesthetic (Cosmetic) surgeons are
members.
BAPRAS (British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Membership
Aesthetic Surgeons)
Royal Collage accredited association of plastic surgeons. Only surgeons
who are fully trained Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic surgeons can
be members.
MDU (Medical
Defence Union)
All surgeons who perform surgery in the private cosmetic surgery
have to have medical indemnity insurance. MDU membership does not mean
the surgeon is a specialist.
BMA (British
Medical Association)
This is the association which represent most of the doctors in
this country membership does not mean a specialist status.
GMC (General
Medical Council)
All doctors practicing in this country must be registered with
the GMC. Being GMC registered does not make the doctor a specialist unless
he/she is on the “Specialist Register” of the GMC
Sthetix Breast Enlargement
Enlargement of the
breasts(Boob job) using silicone implants is fast becoming the most common
cosmetic surgery procedure in the UK.
What Size?
It is possible to increase the breast size by 1 to 3 cup sizes. Most women
will have experienced the fact that if measured at different shops they
are given a different “cup size”. The cup size also varies
depending on the manufacturing of the bra. We therefore cannot guarantee
a specific cup size following breast augmentation. However we use various
techniques to achieve the size you desire.
The increase in breast size depends on existing size of your breasts and
the breast base size (the diameter of the base of the breast where it
is attached to the chest wall).
Am I suitable
for Breast Enhancement?
Most women with small breasts, who are medically fit and have realistic
expectations, would be suitable for the Breast enhancement procedure.
The final decision can only be made after consultation with our consultant
plastic cosmetic surgeon who specialises in this form of surgery.
If your breasts have excessive drooping (Ptosis), then you may be advised
to consider an “Breast uplift” procedure (Mastopexy) which
can be done with or without adding a breast implant. There is no substitute
for a consultation with our consultant before making a decision.
What shape
will I have?
The final shape after surgery depends on a number of factors, your existing
breast shape, chest wall shape and the shape of the Breast implants etc.
Breast implants come in round or tear drop shapes, you can choose which
one to use after discussion with the surgeon. It is your choice.
Where are
the scars?
The scars are in the crease under the breasts
Where are
the implants placed?
Depending on how much tissue you have, the surgeon will recommend whether
the implant is placed under the breast tissue or under the muscle. Both
procedures/ placements have advantages and disadvantages and these will
be explained at your consultation. It’s your choice
What is the
recovery period?
For most women it takes 2 to 4 weeks to recover from this surgery.
When can I
drive a car?
Usually after 2 weeks, but do check with you insurance company.
When can I
exercise?
Gradually start upper body exercise after 4 weeks.
Can I Breast
Feed?
Yes.
Can I have
correction of breast asymmetry (breast of different size or shape)?
Correcting asymmetry may be as simple as using different size implants
at surgery or a complex combination of procedures. Your surgeon will be
able to guide you as to the most suitable course of action. There is no
substitute for a consultation with a specialist plastic cosmetic surgeon.
What are the
risks with Breast Enlargement?
All surgical procedures carry some risks. Your surgeon will discuss these
in details at your consultation. please click here for more information
When can I
go back to work?
Depending on the type of work, you may go back to work between 2 to 4
weeks
Implants guarantee
The Breast implants we use are manufactured by Nagor and McGhan. Both
are arguably the best implants manufacturers and both give a limited life
time guarantee for their implants for capsule formation and Implant failure.
After Care
After discharge from the hospital you can call the hospital day or night
for any advice, and should the need arise you can visit the hospital to
see the resident doctor.
In the event of a complication directly related to your surgery which
may require further treatment, your surgeon and hospital will provide
all care necessary without further cost (exclusions apply).
You will be followed up by the surgeons after your surgery. You will be
given detailed advice on how to care for the breasts. You will have access
to your surgeon if you have any concerns in the years following your surgery.
Sthetix Breast uplift
Breast Uplift is
a procedure for women who are happy with the size of their breasts but
want them lifted and firmer. Drooping of breasts may results as a consequence
of pregnancy, breast feeding gravity or loss of skin elasticity.
Mastopexy lifts, firms and reshapes the breasts by removing excess skin,
this results in a more youthful position and shapes for breasts.
Women who have drooping of breast and find they have lost breasts and
find they have lost breast volume can have a combination of uplift and
insertion of an implant, improving the shape and appearance of their breasts.
Breast uplift is suitable for women who have:
• Pendulous breasts.
• Nipples pointing downwards
• Asymmetry (Different size Breast)
• Loss of volume
with drooping of breasts
Your Consultation
You will have a consultation with a specialist surgeon who will listen
to your concerns, examine you and advise you on what can be done. The
surgeon will explain the procedure, its limitations and potential complications.
There is no substitute for a direct consultation with a fully accredited
surgeon who is a member of BAAPS.
The Mastopexy Procedure
The procedure repositions the nipples, rearranges the breast tissue and
removes the excess skin. If you have chosen an enhancement then this procedure
will include insertion of a breast implant.
There are a number of different ways to carrying out a breast lift. The
procedure for you will be chosen after taking into consideration your
existing breast shape, position of the nipples and your desires.
Usually the incision involves an “anchor shape” scar. Other
techniques involve different shaped scars. Ask your surgeon to illustrate
these to you.
Before Surgery
you will be asked to:
• Stop smoking
• Discontinue oral contraceptive pills (use alternative methods)/
HRT
• Not to take aspirin or anti inflammatory drugs as they increase
the risk of bleeding
• Not to take off the shelves herbal medicines or nutrition supplements.
• Attend a medical examination (pre operative assessment) clinic
where certain tests may be carried out to ensure your safety during anaesthesia
and surgery.
What are the risks?
Inevitable Consequences of Surgery
Bleeding, oozing, Bruising, Swelling and Discomfort are inevitable after
this surgery. Scars take 18 months to mature. These tend to be red and
some time lumpy in the first weeks. Healing of the wounds take about 2-3
weeks.
Complications
• Haematoma (collection of blood) requiring return to theatre
• Infection (1-4%) – if severe may lead to tissue(skin / breast
tissue) loss
• Fat necrosis (10%)- resulting in lumps which may or may not resolve.
• Hypertrophic or keloid (lumpy) scars
• Delayed wound healing (20%)
• Dog ears (folds of skin and fat at the end of scars)
• Loss of sensation in nipple / breast skin (30%)
• Loss (necrosis/death) of nipple areola or skin (risk 1%)
• Breast feeding problems
• Cancer screening. When you have a mammogram (x-ray of the breast)
the doctor should know you have had surgery to the breasts.
• DVT and PE – clots in the legs and these clots travelling
to the lung.
After Care
Your well being is our first priority. To monitor your progress we will
arrange appointments at appropriate intervals for follow-up examinations
with your surgeons. You also have access to our clinic and the hospital
where you had your surgery should you need our help or advice.
How much will it cost?

Sthetix Breast Asymmetry
Almost all women have some degree of breast asymmetry. Minor degree dose
not require correction. However, when the asymmetry interferes with selection
of clothing or psychological or sexual well being of a person, corrective
surgery can produce pleasing results. A combination of procedures may
be used to achieve a greater degree of symmetry. Absolute symmetry is
usually impossible to achieve.
All surgical procedures carry certain risks and there are limitations
of what can be achieved. A full and frank discussion with the surgeon
is the only way to gain a clear insight into the procedure and allow you
to make an informed decision about your surgery
Sthetix Breast fat transfer
What's new?
Most women would like the fat from their hips moved to there breasts.
It is now possible. Sydney R. Coleman, MD, the pioneer of fat transfer,
has just presented his eleven-year experience in breast enlargement with
a woman’s own fat.
This procedure has been used by Plastic Surgeons since 1995. Using Dr
Coleman`s specially designed instruments, it is possible to achieve pleasing,
long term results. Fat transfer can be used as an alternative to silicone
implants. This is possible in cases where a small augmentation is desired
(around a cup size). We have been using this technique to correct deformities
in breasts , following cancer surgery, for the last 3 years. Pleasing
, long term results are possible with this result.
Fat grafting procedure starts with harvesting the required amount of fat
, this is then prepared and then injected carefully into the desired area
using tiny incisions. This procedure takes considerably longer then breast
augmentation using implants. Five to eight hours may be needed to carry
out a breast augmentation using this technique.
The main concern about injecting fat to the breasts is with cancer detection.
Any surgery to the breast can lead to formation of lumps or calcification.
Careful and regular breast examination and mammograms are needed to monitor
patients. To date, there is no evidence to suggest that fat injection
is less safe then any breast surgery. Studies are currently been undertaken
to study fat grafting to breasts.
When grafting larger volumes of fat to the body, surgeons with extensive
experience are most likely to obtain the best results. Fat grafting to
the breast should only be performed by an Accredited plastic surgeon experienced
in not only fat grafting, but also the anatomy and aesthetics of breast
augmentation.
Who is a candidate?
• Any woman who is healthy
• Has enough body fat to have the procedure done
• Reconstruction candidates
• Women who want a small augmentation
• Has normal mammography
Sthetix Breast Reduction
Large breasts are not always desirable and indeed can be a source of great
discomfort for some women. Neck pain, shoulder pain and back ache are
attributed some times to large breasts. In carefully selected patients
breast reduction is a satisfying procedure, providing relief from physical
symptoms and may enhance self esteem. It is important to realize that
this is a major surgical procedure which should only be undertaken after
careful consideration.
After Surgery
You're likely to feel tired and sore for a few days following your surgery,
but you'll be up and around in 24 to 48 hours. Most of your discomfort
can be controlled by medication prescribed by your doctor. Within several
days, the gauze dressings, if you have them, will be removed, and you
may use a sports bra.
Inevitable Consequences
of Surgery
Other Aspects
There can be no guarantee of absolute symmetry in size or shape. Breast
size after surgery is not guaranteed to a particular cup size and breast
shape and position will continue to change with time after surgery, as
effects of age, weight change and gravity are not be eliminated. There
is no guarantee that symptoms of back pain, shoulder and neck discomfort
and breast pain will be relieved by this surgery. Obesity and smoking
increase the risk of complications. You are strongly advised to reduce
weight and must stop smoking. In the case of very large breasts, fullness
may remain on the side of chest following breast reduction.
Before your surgery you should have a frank discussion about your expectations
with the surgeon and he will be equally frank with you about the limitations
and complications of this surgery
Sthetix Abdominoplasty - Tummy Tuck Procedure
Abdominoplasty or
tummy tuck can help to improve the appearance of the abdominal (tummy)
area. Pregnancy, previous surgery or dramatic weight changes, can cause
excess accumulation of fat or skin around the abdomen, which can lead
to both physical discomfort and uneasiness about the appearance of the
body. The appearance of the abdomen can be changed with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
to a leaner shape which would fit better into clothes.
The abdominoplasty(tummy tuck) procedure requires the plastic surgeon
to make an incision extending from hipbone to hipbone. The surgeon lifts
the skin and fat to reveal the underlying muscle. He may stitch the muscle
together and then stretch the skin back over the new, firmer muscle, removing
excess skin and fat. In cases where fat is concentrated in the lower abdomen,
a mini tummy tuck, or partial abdominoplasty, may be an option. In this
procedure at our practice, a smaller incision can be used.
While the tummy tuck will result in scarring, the surgeon will try and
make sure that this scarring is as inconspicuous as possible. Directly
following the procedure, patients experience some pain, soreness, swelling,
or bruising around the abdomen. Complications include haematoma, infection,
loss of skin, wide or lumpy scars, loss of sensation in lower abdomen
and upper thighs, dog ears (folds of tissue at ends of scars).
All surgical procedures carry certain risks and there are limitations
of what can be achieved. A full and frank discussion with the surgeon
is the only way to gain a clear insight into the procedure and allow you
to make an informed decision about your surgery.
Sthetix Brachioplasty - Upper Arm Lift / Inner Thigh Lift
Loss
of weight or simple aging changes may lead to excess skin being present
in the upper arms. Cosmetic surgery may hold the answer for some of these
cases. This skin may also interfere with dressing and the full range of
motion. An upper arm lift (brachioplasty), can remove this excess skin
and tissue, giving an improved appearance to the arms. This procedure
can be combined with liposuction in selected cases to improve the results.
Bleeding, bruising, swelling, surgical dog ears and a scar along the inside
of the arm can be expected in this procedure. Arm lift is a procedure
which requires very careful consideration on the part of the patient and
there is no substitute for a detailed consultation to avoid disappointment.
Minor degrees of skin laxity may be treated successfully with Thermage.
All surgical procedures carry certain risks and there are limitations
of what can be achieved. A full and frank discussion with the Plastic
Cosmetic surgeons at Sthetix clinics is the only way to gain a clear insight
into the procedure and allow you to make an informed decision about your
surgery.
Inner Thigh Lift
This is performed under general anaesthetic, requiring an over night hospital
stay. The scars are very noticeable with this operation as the incisions
are made along the inner thigh from the knee up to the groin. In some
cases if extra lift is needed the incision is carried along either the
groin or the buttock fold. Again the excess skin and fat are removed,
and the incision is stitched back together (using dissolvable sutures)
giving an improved appearance to the thighs. This procedure can be combined
with liposuction in selected cases to improve the results.
Sthetix Liposuction Procedure
Liposuction involves
a number of tiny incisions (cuts) in and around the area to be treated.
This is done either under a general anaesthesia of local anaesthesia (you
are awake) with sedation. Your surgeon would have discussed this with
you at your original consultation.
Liposuction (fat removal) may be carried out as a day case, which means
that you can have the operation and go home the same day. However, for
more extensive treatment, an overnight stay may be necessary.
Your surgeon can use several different methods and will discuss what the
most appropriate technique is for you.
Wet or Super wet techniques the most common way of doing liposuction.
Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, your surgeon will inject a fluid
mixture containing a salty solution, local anaesthetic and adrenaline
into the fatty area being treated. This helps reduce bleeding, bruising
and swelling and makes it easier to remove the fat cells.
A cut will be made in your skin and a thin metal tube called a cannula
will be inserted. This will be attached to a vacuum pump or a syringe
and will be moved about vigorously within the fatty tissue to suck out
the fat and the fluid. For larger areas, more than one cut may be made
to reach all the fatty deposits that are being treated.
After liposuction, the treated area will be firmly strapped with bandages
or elasticised tape. You may be fitted with an elasticised support garment.
This will help to reduce swelling and help your skin mould to your new
shape.
After liposuction
You will be given
painkillers to help relieve any discomfort as the anaesthetic wears off.
It is important to do deep breathing exercises to help reduce the risk
of developing a chest infection. Your doctor or nurse can show you how
to do these.
Before discharge, your nurse will give you advice about caring for your
stitches, hygiene and bathing. You will also be given an appointment to
have a wound check.
Recovering from liposuction
Once home, you may take more painkillers if needed, as advised by your
surgeon or nurse.
You will usually need to wear the elasticised garment or bandages for
up to six weeks, depending on your surgeon's advice. They can usually
be temporarily removed to be washed and for bathing
Your surgeon will give you advice about resuming your normal activities.
You may need to avoid strenuous exercise for up to a month, but walking
and gentle exercises are encouraged. If you only had small areas treated,
you may only need a few days off work. For larger operations, you may
need to take 7-14 days off.
It may be several months before you can see the full results of your operation
as the swelling can take a long time to completely settle down.
It helps if you have skin with good elasticity, which is more likely to
'shrink' down to the smaller volume of fat beneath.
Making an Informed
Decision
All cosmetic procedure require careful consideration. And it is sensible
to discuss the options with your GP, who may be able to recommend reputable
surgeons.
Side-effects are the unwanted but mostly temporary effects of a successful
procedure. For example, feeling sick as a result of the general anaesthetic.
Anyone having liposuction can also expect:
• Bruising, which can be painful and usually takes about a month
to disappear
• lumpiness or swelling, which may not completely settle for up
to six months
• scars, typically 1-2 cm long, pink and noticeable at first, which
should become finer after a few weeks
• thrombophlebitis (inflammation of the veins - not the same as
thrombosis) around the inside of your knee and inner part of your upper
thigh if these areas are treated, which should settle after a few weeks
• swollen ankles
If you have large areas treated or are prone to anaemia, you may need
to take iron tablets for about a month after the operation.
Complications are
unexpected problems that can occur during or after the procedure. Most
people are not affected. The main complications of any operation are bleeding
during or soon after the procedure, infection and an abnormal reaction
to the anaesthetic. It's also possible for a blood clot to develop in
a vein in the legs - a deep vein thrombosis or DVT.
Specific complications of liposuction are rare but can include:
• Seromas: the development of fluid-filled areas under the skin,
which may need to be drained with a needle
• Fat embolism: fat getting into one of the blood vessels, which
could travel in the veins and cause a blockage in the lungs
• Altered sensation: numbness or abnormal sensation in the treated
area that can last for several months, but can be permanent
• damage to internal organs, which may require surgery to repair
and can occasionally be fatal
• serious disruption
of the fluid balance of the body due to fluid being injected and sucked
out, which in very rare cases can cause breathing problems and be fatal
• Keloids: unusually red or raised scars (called keloid scars) which
some people have an inherited tendency to form
• an unexpected allergic reaction to the fluid used for wet liposuction
• Uneven surface of skin or lumps
• Asymmetrical results
• Loose skin (empty bag appearance)
The chance of complications
depends on the type of procedure that is being performed. Generally speaking,
if you are having large volumes of fat and fluid removed during the operation,
the risk of complications is higher. Your surgeon will explain how the
risks apply to you.
Sthetix Lower Body Lift Procedure
After a successful
weight loss following gastric bypass surgery people often find they are
left with excess folds of skin that will not conform to their new body
shape. This skin may not shrink once it has lost its elasticity, and surgery
is the only way to reduce it.
A lower body lift can reduce excess skin around the abdomen and buttocks,
improving patient mobility and giving the lower body better shape. Depending
on the patient’s condition, we may carry out abdominoplasty, belt
lipectomy, liposuction, medial thigh lift, lateral thigh lift, or a combination
of these procedures. If you are a bariatric surgery patient with excess
skin on your lower body, a lower body lift might be the right procedure
for you. This is extensive surgery and must be approached with caution.
These procedures carry significant risks and you are encouraged to discuss
them with the plastic surgeon in detail before making any decisions.
Sthetix Calf Augmentation
Some people are unhappy
with the shape or size of their calf, and no amount of exercise has improved
this.
THE OPERATION
The operation takes approximately 1 hour and is performed under general
anaesthetic with you lying on your front. The incision is very discreet
as it is made along the crease line behind your knee; a pocket is formed
below the existing muscle to enable the implant to be inserted.
DAY OF SURGERY
• Leave all valuables at home.
• Remove all jewellery (except wedding rings these will be taped).
• Remove all signs of make-up and nail varnish.
PRE-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS
• Avoid cigarettes and all nicotine products 6 weeks prior to surgery.
• Do not consume alcohol for 1 week before surgery.
• Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen or vitamin E, prior to surgery
as this may effect blood clotting.
POST -OPERATIVE
• A 1night hospital stay is required
• 2 weeks off work is recommended
• No driving for at least 2 week (It is recommended that you check
with your insurance company).
• The swelling and bruising will subside after a few weeks.
• Dressings are removed after 1 week
RISKS
All surgical procedures carry certain risks and there are limitations
of what can be achieved. These will have been discussed prior to surgery
with the surgeon as this is the best way to gain a clear insight into
the procedure and allow you to make an informed decision about your surgery.
Sthetix Face Lift Surgery
The best candidate
for a facelift is a man or woman whose face and neck have begun to sag,
but whose skin still has some elasticity and whose bone structure is strong
and well-defined. Most patients are in their forties to sixties, but facelifts
can be done successfully on people in their seventies or eighties as well.
This surgery alone has little or no effect on eyes, lips and chin areas.
A facelift can make you look younger and fresher, and it may enhance your
self-confidence in the process. But it can't give you a totally different
look, nor can it restore the health and vitality of your youth. Before
you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and
discuss them with your surgeon.
When a facelift is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon at Sthetix
Cosmetic Surgery Clinic complications are infrequent and usually minor.
Still, individuals vary greatly in their anatomy, their physical reactions,
and their healing abilities, and the outcome is never completely predictable.
Complications that can occur include haematoma (a collection of blood
under the skin that must be removed by the surgeon), asymmetry, injury
to the nerves that control facial muscles (usually temporary but can be
permanent), loss of sensation around the ears, infection, and reactions
to the anesthesia, asymmetry, poor healing of the skin is most likely
to affect smokers and can leave unexpected scars. DVT and PE.
You can reduce your risks by closely following your surgeon's advice both
before and after surgery.
No guarantees about the outcome of the surgery , the risks or the longevity
of the results can be given.
PLANNING YOUR SURGERY
Facelifts are very individualised procedures. In your initial consultation
the surgeon will evaluate your face, including the skin and underlying
bone, and discuss your goals for the surgery.
Sthetix Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery or
Blepharoplasty can freshen the look of your eyes, excess skin in the upper
eyelids and bags in the lower eyelid may be amenable to correction with
Blepharoplasty.
Eye lid surgery involves making incisions in the crease of the upper eyelid
and along the border (under the eye lashes) of the lower eye lid. Excess
skin and fat are removed. Tightening of the lower eye lid may be needed
in some cases.
This procedure is carried out at Health Care Commission accredited hospitals
by our fully accredited FRCS (plast) Surgeons in Manchester, Liverpool,
St Helens and Southport.
Not all upper eye lids have excess skin and fat and the appearance of
tired, heavy eyes may be due to brow decent ( the brow being too low).
In these cases a Brow lift (endoscopic brow lift) is indicated to improve
the appearance. In some cases a combination of Eyelid surgery and brow
lift may produce the best result. Not all lower eyelids have `bags` (excess
skin and fat). In some cases of sunken eyes, fat transfer (Coleman Technique)
may give the best results.
However, each individual's anatomy varies. Very few if any eyes are absolutely
symmetrical and symmetrical results following surgery can not be guaranteed.
The shape of the eyes may change after eyelid surgery (specially lower
eyelid surgery). Risks include haematoma (collection of blood), infection,
lumpy, red or wide or asymmetrical scars, dog ears, inversion or eversion
of lower eyelid, excessive watering or dryness of eyes. There is a very
small risk of injury to the eye. Eyelid surgery dose not lift the brow
position and may not produce an `open` eye effect.
Careful consultation and consideration of information provided at the
time of consultation at Sthetix clinics will help you make an informed
decision. Unrealistic expectations lead to unhappy patients and surgeons.
Eyelid surgery can give the vast majority of patients a very satisfying
new look.
Sthetix Brow Lift Surgery
The sagging of brow
may cause the person to look tired, angry and old. A Brow Lift is performed
as an inpatient procedure under a general anaesthetic. Typically it takes
1 to 2 hours and an overnight stay in hospital. With the `open` method
the incision is hidden just inside your hair line or a few centimetres
behind the hair line. Selected muscles and excess skin may be removed
to lift the brow position and improve the appearance of wrinkles on the
brow.
Endoscopic brow lift is a similar, minimally invasive procedure to lift
the brow and reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the forehead. Endoscopic
or minimal - scar brow lift is performed using a fibre optic camera inserted
via small incisions in the hair line. This is attached to a television
screen allowing the surgeon to visualize the surgical field. It leaves
hidden small scars and the brow in a lifted, younger position.
You can expect some discomfort after this procedure, as well as some swelling
and bruising. As the incisions heal, you will notice some itching and
possibly some numbness. This usually improves with time. The risks with
this procedure include paralysis of the muscles which move the brow; this
is usually temporary but can be permanent. Hair loss in the area of surgery
is also a risk with this procedure.
All surgical procedures carry certain risks and there are limitations
of what can be achieved. A full and frank discussion with the surgeon
is the only way to gain a clear insight into the procedure and allow you
to make an informed decision about your surgery.
Sthetix Fat Injection - Fat transfer
Fat transfer ( fat
injections)done at Sthetix cosmetic surgery clinic takes (harvests) fat
cells from one area of the body (usually tummy or thighs) to another location.
It can be used to fill in wrinkles, scars, and other imperfections as
well as to plump up the lips or cheeks. Donor sites (where fat is taken
from) may include the abdomen, buttocks, hips, and other areas where fat
cells are available. Fat transfer uses living cells from your own body.
There is no chance of rejection with this procedure.
The technique used by us is one developed and perfected by Dr Coleman
of New York city. We have been using this technique for the last 3 years
in increasing number of patients with pleasing results. Types of surgery
include breast defects following lump removals, contour defects following
surgery and after trauma (injury/ accidents) and for cosmetic improvements
on the face (cheek augmentation, breast augmentation (enhancement) brow
improvements, improvements of per orbital (eyelids) area, restoration
of volume loss, lip augmentation), hand etc.
Fat grafting procedure starts at Sthetix cosmetic surgery clinic with
harvesting the required amount of fat , this is then prepared and injected
carefully into the desired area using tiny incisions. This procedure takes
a considerably amount of time.
This procedure is carried out at Health Care Commission accredited hospitals
by our fully accredited FRCS (plastic) Surgeons in Manchester, Liverpool,
St Helens and Southport.
The time spent with your surgeon at Sthetix cosmetic surgery clinic before
any procedure is as important as the surgery itself. This is very true
for fat transfer. It is critical to understand the desired expectations,
and wishes as well as the limitation of what can be achieved. We personally
evaluate each patient's case.
Sthetix Rhinoplasty
An attractive nose
is one that achieves a harmonious balance with your other facial features.
The characteristics of the nose are inherited. The objective of the operation
is to make your nose look right for your eyes so that you lose your self-consciousness.
It is, therefore, most important that you are clear in your mind what
it is that you dislike about your nose, and that you are able to explain
this to your surgeon. It is usually recommended that young people wait
until facial growth is completed, at around 16 years old, before considering
rhinoplasty.
Sometimes the size of the nose as a feature of the face is influenced
by the proportions of the other facial features, such as the chin and
cheek bones, and to ‘normalise’ the appearance of the face,
it may be advisable to alter these features as well, either at the same
time as the rhinoplasty, or during a separate procedure.
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia. It can be performed
from within the nose, with incisions made inside the nostril (closed rhinoplasty),
or by making incision across the vertical strip of tissue separating the
nostril (columella), as well as within the nose (open rhinoplasty). The
type of technique depends very much on the nasal work required. The sacrs
resulting from the surgery is usually satisfactory. However, in a small
number of patients, it may be thick, and can take several months to settle.
Working through these incisions, the nose’s framework of bone and
cartilage is sculpted to the desired shape. Your surgeon may reshape or
reposition the bones in your nose, or build up certain areas, using either
nasal cartilage or bones and cartilage from other body site, or other
materials. The skin and soft tissue are then redraped over the reshaped
framework. If the lower part of the nose is being narrowed or the nostrils
are being reduced, small wedges of skin at the base of the nostrils may
be removed through incisions that are hidden in the nose’s natural
creases.
Every surgical procedure carries a certain amount of risk, and it is important
that you understand the risks before embarking on any surgical procedures.
It is quite common to experience some difficulty in breathing through
the nose during the first week after rhinoplasty, which disappears as
the swelling settles. Occasionally though, the difficulty persists and
can be permanent. Occasionally the operation is complicated by heavy nose
bleed, or infection. In about 10% of patients, surgical revision may be
necessary 6-12 months after nasal surgery when all the swelling has settled.
Secondary surgery like this will involve additional expenses.
There are certain limitations to the surgery, such as: If the skin on
the tip of your nose is thick and oily, it may not be possible to reduce
its bulk as much as you like. There may be limitation to the amount of
reduction that can be achieved to the size of your nose. If your nose
is bent from previous injury, it may not be possible to make it completely
straight. Large nostrils can be difficult to reduce without leaving noticeable
scars
STHETIX
CHEEK / CHIN IMPLANTS
This procedure helps
to strengthen a persons profile by giving them a strong defined jaw line
or cheek bones. Implants fill out the face that appears tired or sunken,
leaving a more youthful look.

anaesthetic. The scars are discreet as they are inside the mouth. A small
pocket is formed so the implant can be inserted the incisions are then
closed with dissolvable sutures
DAY OF SURGERY
• Remove all jewellery (except wedding rings these will be taped).
• Remove all signs of make-up and nail varnish.
PRE-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

Wrinkle Reduction Treatment Botox
A toxin produced
by a bacterium called Clostridium Botulinum (Botox). This toxin causes
paralysis of the muscles exposed to its action. In cosmetic use, the muscles
responsible for wrinkle formation (dynamic lines, movement lines) are
selectively exposed to the action of botulinum toxin A (Botox). Thus reducing
or eliminating the lines.
Botulinum Toxin A was first isolated in 1827, it was not until the early
1990s that its use in cosmetic treatment began.
First used in the forehead for wrinkle reduction, its use has now spread
to other areas of the face and neck. Frown lines and laughter lines (crows
feet) reduction is the most common use of Botox®.
It is also widely used to treat excessive sweating in the under arm area
(hyperhidrosis).
Ideal candidates for wrinkle reduction treatments are those who understand
the cause of their lines, understand the lines (wrinkles) can be for different
reasons and some can be treated by appropriate use of Botulinum Toxin
A.
Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox®) injections are now the most common
non surgical treatment for lines and wrinkles
Is it Safe?
It is a safe treatment and has been used in cosmetic and medical therapies
for 20 years.
What is it used for?
It is used for lines and wrinkles to temporarily improve the appearance
of forehead furrows, frown lines, crows feet (laughter lines) lip (smokers)
lines and dimpled chin.
Botox injections can be used to give the effect of a brow lift.
Botox® (Botulinum Toxin) is also used to treat excessive sweating
(Hyperhydrosis) in the under arms area. Nowadays it is a popular treatment
used by many to eliminate the sweat patchs on cloths on important and
special occassions such as weddings.
How does it work?
By temporarily blocking nerve transmission to the muscles under the skin.
Lines and wrinkles formed by the action of these muscles are reduced or
removed.
How painful are the injection?
Not really painful, only transient discomfort is felt at the site of injection
When will it start to work?
It takes about 3 to 5 days to start to work, the maximum effect is seen
about 14 days.
How long does it last?
It lasts about 3 to 4 months. With repeated treatments it may last longer.
What are the side effects?
Side effects are rare. Bruising at the site of injection is the most common.
Rare effects include drooping of eyelids, asymmetry, and headaches and
very rarely it can cause flu like symptoms.

Chemical Peel at Sthetix Cosmetic Surgery Clinic
This is a non invasive
procedure that helps to restore a younger fresher appearance. It smoothes
and improves the texture of the facial skin by removing the damaged layers.
There are different types of peel
Superficial Peel - the most commonly used, it is a quick and easy treatment
that removes the outer layer of cells, lightly exfoliating the skin to
give a healthy glow.
The face is cleansed and peel painted on and left for two to ten minutes.
Mild stinging may occur. The peel is then washed off and neutralised.
The skin will look pink afterwards and may show faint white discolouration
or blotches which fade in one or two hours. There are no after-effects,
and you can go straight back to normal daily life.
After a superficial peel, the skin immediately looks brighter and more
radiant.
It is recommended that the treatment is repeated weekly for four to six
weeks, and maintain the effect with a monthly peel.
Medium-depth Peel - penetrates further into the skin to reduce small wrinkles
and acne scars. May also help to give a more even skin tone. Most often
used to improve the appearance of sun-damaged skin on the face or backs
of hands. They are also effective on some spots and blemishes and acne
scarring.
The skin is cleansed and peel applied evenly. The treated area turns whitish
grey over several minutes. Cool saline compresses are then applied to
neutralise the acid in the peel. The face may swell when the peel is applied,
and burning or stinging lasts for about an hour after treatment.
Recovery takes a week or more depending on how quickly you heal (older
skin heals more slowly). In the five to six days after treatment, the
skin may turn dark brown, with white streaks. It will itch and begin to
peel, after which the skin is bright red, fading to fresh pink over the
next three to six weeks.
It is recommended that the treatment is repeated monthly until you achieve
the effect you want, and then maintain it with a peel every 6-12 months.
Result
The results from the moderate to deep peels will not be noticeable until
the skin has peeled off, and then healed. It's important to follow the
after-care instructions you will be given, to help the skin to heal successfully.
It is recommended
that sunscreens should be used for the first 3 months, as this helps prevent
the problem of increased pigmentation. New skin may have too much pigment
which will turn to brown blotches in sunlight (hyper-pigmentation).
Chemical peels probably
won't be recommended if you have a history of skin scarring, any abnormal
pigmentation, facial warts, Afro-Caribbean or Asian skin (loss of skin
pigments can occur), red hair and freckled skin, or have used certain
acne treatments within the last year.
Chemical Peels cannot
alter the size of pores, improve sagging skin or remove deep scarring.
Anti-ageing cosmetics containing fruit acids, or retinol, may help improve
the skin's appearance.
Stop smoking and drinking, take regular exercise to improve circulation,
have a healthy diet, and use sunscreen all help prevent deterioration
in the skin's condition.

and home therapy products.
Sthetix Thermage Procedure
The Thermage procedure
is a non-invasive, little or no-downtime treatment that aims to deliver
tighter skin, renewed facial contours and healthier collagen. Some times
described as non-surgical facelift.
At the heart of Thermage is the patented Thermacool TC system. This sophisticated
device enable doctors to deliver energy deeper in the skin than conventional
laser therapy. Suitability for any patient for the Thermage procedure
is decided only after careful consideration of their wishes and expectations.
The plastic surgeon at The Renacres Hall Hospital will help assess the
degree of skin laxity and recommend exactly where the thermage procedure
could tighten up skin and renew the contours of the face. This procedure
is most suitable for those with early ageing changes, (age 35 to 60) It
is not a substitute for surgery.
This procedure has also been shown in some studies to be an effective
therapy for moderate to severe active acne. While it will not cure the
condition it can, in selected cases, reduce the incidence and severity
of recurrence.Skin is made up of two layers, the visible thin outer layer
called the epidermis, and the deeper layer called the dermis. The main
structural component of the dermis is a protein called collagen, which
provides the skin its strength. As we age, the body produces less collagen
resulting in wrinkles and laxity. The Thermage procedure causes the collagen
in the dermal layers of the skin and its underlying tissue to tighten,
thereby; without surgery, reducing skin laxity and wrinkles and renewing
facial contours.
The Thermage procedure for Skin Tightening uses patented radiofrequency
technology to create a precisely controlled zone of heating in the dermis
and the underlying tissue. At the same time the epidermis is protected
with continual cooling. Heating of the collagen to critical temperatures,
initiates a natural biological reaction that causes the collagen to contract
and thicken. This process, called denaturation, provides the initial results
of tighter, smoother looking skin. In addition, the body also initiates
a second response to heating within the dermis and underlying tissue.
This response is part of the body's natural wound-healing response and
initiates new collagen creation over the next 3 to 6 months, providing
long-term tightening of the skin. The combination of these two processes,
provide immediate skin tightening and long-term tightening effects.
Sthetix Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are
substances that are injected under the skin and are used to fill and smooth
facial lines and wrinkles. Fillers can be used for lines and wrinkles
around the mouth, eyes, nose and forehead and can enhance the lips giving
them greater volume and a fuller appearance.Anyone can benefit from dermal
fillers, both men and women.
Several types of filler are available. A good way of classifying fillers
is according to their composition:
Collagen containing fillers
These are made from collagen; a substance that is found naturally in skin
and which gives it its natural elasticity.
Hyaluronic acid fillers
These fillers make more hyaluronic acid; a substance that is found naturally
in the skin and which results in better lubrication and cushioning under
the skin surface. Restylane and Hydra Fill are probably the most popular
hyaluronic acid products.
Poly-L-lactic acid
These fillers are made from poly-L-lactic acid a substance that stimulates
the production of more collagen in the skin and so produces an increase
in the thickness of the skin.

Sthetix Labial Reduction Surgery (Labiaplasty)
Am I Suitable for
Labiaplasty?
The labia minora (the inner lips surrounding the entrance to the vagina)
grow during puberty and vary enormously in size and thickness. They are
rarely symmetrical and if they are particularly enlarged women find them
uncomfortable and embarrassing. They are prone to irritation wearing tight
clothing and sports women and horse riders experience particular discomfort.
Many women find the size and appearance of their labia minora embarrassing
with a sexual partner.
Tears and stretching of the labia minora can also occur during childbirth.
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure which reduces the size of the labia
minora so that they are less obtrusive and equal on both sides.
When can I exercise?
Usually 2 – 4 Weeks after the procedure.
When can I Drive?
You should be comfortable to drive within 2 weeks of the procedure but
please check with your insurance company
When can I go back
to work?
You should be able
to return to work with in 2 – 4 weeks of the surgery.
Aftercare
After discharge from hospital you can call the hospital day or night for
any advice and, should the need arise, you can visit the hospital to see
the resident doctor. In the event of a complication directly related to
your surgery, which may require further treatment, your surgeon and hospital
will provide all necessary care without further cost (exclusions apply).
You will be seen by your surgeon for a follow up visit after six weeks
and you will be given detailed information about your care during the
immediate post operative period.
What are the risks?
All surgical procedures carry some risks. Your surgeon will discuss these
in details with you at your consultation.
Additional Information
(Complications)
The risk of infection is reduced by antibiotics given during the procedure
but if infection does occur there will be increased pain and delay in
healing. The sutures that are used are the same as after childbirth and
dissolve naturally with in 5 -7 days. They do not usually need to be removed.
Scarring can occur which can make the labia minora more thickened. The
labia minora form part of the erogenous zone at the entrance to the vagina
and some loss of sensation can occur. Most sexual pleasure, however, occurs
as a result of stimulation to the clitoris which is not disturbed during
labiaplasty. Most women find that their sexual confidence improves after
labiaplasty and therefore sexual function and pleasure is enhanced.
Sthetix Vaginoplasty (Vaginal Rejuvenation)
Am I Suitable for
Vaginoplasty?
After childbirth the vaginal muscles are stretched and although postnatal
physiotherapy and exercises can help, the vagina often does not regain
its normal tone and remains lax. This can cause dissatisfaction for both
partners during sexual intercourse.
The perineal body (the muscle between the vagina and the anus) can also
be damaged by childbirth which results in the entrance to the vagina gaping
open.
Vaginoplasty
or vaginal rejuvenation is a procedure that corrects these problems resulting
in a tighter feel, both inside and at the entrance to the vagina.
When can I resume sexual Intercourse?
Sexual activity can be resumed 4 – 6 weeks after the procedure
When can I exercise?
Gentle exercise can usually be resumed 2 – 4 Weeks after surgery.
When can I Drive?
You should be comfortable enough to drive within 2 weeks but you should
check with your insurance company
When can I go back
to work?
You should be able to return to work with in 2 – 4 weeks of the
surgery.
Aftercare
After discharge from hospital you can call the hospital day or night for

immediate post operative period.
What are the risks?
All surgical procedures carry some risks. Your surgeon will discuss these
in details with you at your consultation.
Additional Information
(Complications)
As with all surgery there is always a small risk of complications.
Infection is minimised by antibiotics given at the time of surgery but
if infection does occur this will cause discomfort and delay healing.
The stitches used for vaginoplasty are similar to those used after childbirth
and dissolve naturally after 5 – 7 days. They do not usually need
to be removed.
Excess scar tissue can form which may occasionally cause the vagina to
become too narrow and this can cause discomfort with intercourse. Some
women also complain of loss of sensation at the entrance to the vagina
due to the damage to the sensitive nerve endings in the area.
Most women, however, find that the results of surgery are very satisfactory
and their sexual function and pleasure is enhanced after vaginoplasty.
