Arm Lift
This is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the upper arms by removing excess skin and fat. Commonly known as bingo wings, loose skin on the upper arms can be a source of embarrassment and prevent women from wearing their desired clothing. Experienced surgeons at Sthetix clinic in Liverpool can carry out this procedure for you.
Loss of weight or simple ageing changes may lead to excess skin being present in the upper arms. Cosmetic surgery may hold the answer for some of these cases. An upper arm lift (brachioplasty), can remove this excess skin and tissue, giving an improved appearance to the arms. This procedure can be combined with liposuction in selected cases to improve the results.
Am I suitable?
The ideal candidate for arm lift is someone with excess loose skin on the upper arm which hangs like a wing when the arm is held out. This may be associated with excess fat.
This person should also have a strong personality as the scars from an arm lift are rarely easy to hide. The scars which result from this procedure can be visible during social occasions, therefore it is essential that anyone considering this procedure is fully aware of this possibility and capable of dealing with awkward questions.
It is important to remember that arm lift is a major surgical procedure, and for this reason, a suitable candidate must be medically fit and psychologically stable. In most cases a pleasing result can be obtained.
Surgery:
The procedure is carried out under general anaesthesia. It can be done as a day case or you may stay in hospital overnight. The procedure may start with liposuction if required followed by removal of excess skin from the inner part of the arm. Care is taken to avoid nerves and blood vessels during this procedure.
The resulting scar runs on the inner part of the arm extending from the armpit towards the elbow. The length of the scar varies depending on the amount of the skin which requires excision. The arms are then wrapped in dressings.
Risks and Limitations:
All surgical procedures carry certain risks and there are limitations.
Bleeding, bruising, swelling are to be expected after any surgical procedure. Potential risks include haematoma, infection, surgical dog ears, contour deformity, loss of sensation, a lumpy or red scar along the inside of the arm.
Arm lift is a procedure which requires very careful consideration on the part of the patient and there is no substitute for a detailed consultation to avoid disappointment. Minor degrees of skin laxity may be treated successfully with Thermage.
After care:
Your wellbeing is our first priority. To monitor your progress we will arrange appointments at appropriate intervals for follow-up examinations with your surgeon. All your aftercare is fully included in the cost of surgery.
When you are discharged, care instructions will be given to you and you will have 24 hour access to trained staff who will be there to advise you should you have any questions or concerns.
In this case, where both arms may be out of action for a few days, you are advised to ensure you have a member of family or a close friend available to help you while you recover from surgery.
2 weeks after surgery, one of our trained staff will see you and check your wounds. The surgeon who performed your surgery will see you after 6 weeks for a follow-up and as often as required until you are fully recovered. This follow-up is a standard and will be provided at no extra cost.
In the unlikely event of a problem, arrangements will be made for you to be seen by trained staff, and if required, by the surgeon who performed the procedure. As all our surgeons live and work locally, it is always possible to see your surgeon at relatively short notice, if required. Our surgeons don’t leave the country, or indeed the local area after performing the surgery. On the rare occasion that the surgeon leaves the local area for other commitments, there will always be another trained plastic surgeon from our team available to provide care.
In the unlikely event of a complication which is directly related to your surgery, we will provide or arrange further surgery and/or treatment at no extra cost.
Inner Thigh Lift
This is performed under general anaesthetic, requiring an overnight hospital stay. The scars are noticeable with this operation as the incisions are made along the inner thigh from the knee up to the groin. In some cases if extra lift is needed the incision is carried along either the groin or the buttock fold. Again the excess skin and fat are removed, and the incision is stitched back together (using dissolvable sutures) giving an improved appearance to the thighs. This procedure can be combined with liposuction in selected cases to improve the results.
