‘The Botox Bust’ on the BBC

At Sthetix, we pride ourselves on our CQC status and clinical setting. Our injectors are all highly trained medical professionals and we welcome more stringent regulation of the industry to keep patients safe. In this episode, she’s on the trail of medics who may be wrongly providing botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox, and the beauticians who either don’t know the strict rules or are choosing to ignore them. Researchers suggest that as many as 100,000 Botox injections are carried out each year in the UK, and campaigners report an astonishing trebling in [...]

How could I look after having cosmetic surgery?

*  Stars

How could I look after having cosmetic surgery? This is a question frequently asked of our surgeons. Any decision to modify your appearance cannot be taken lightly and it is only normal for a patient to want to see the final result before the procedure. To date patients were not provided with a response to this all-important question. However, with Crisalix a new cutting edge 3D imaging system, it is now possible to see yourself before and after cosmetic surgery. 3D Simulation Crisalix is the world’s first web-based using three standard 2D photos for aesthetic procedures, which recreates in 3D the patient’s face or body to further enable accurate pre-visualisations of the final result. Using this technology a patient can see their new face or body in 3D, as opposed to imagining the result using traditional methods, such as photos of other patients that do not represent the patient’s own anatomy. A Dimple is a small depression in the skin. On the face it is present due to a small gap in the zygomaticus major muscle. When we smile this gap presents as an indentation. Dimples in the cheek give a cute, sweet, feminine appearance and that is why many ladies who do not have dimples in the cheek want one creating. Predictable Ear Correction

*  Stars

Predictable Ear Correction The biggest advantage of Earfold ® is its predictability, “what you see is what you get”. The Initial Consultation Your initial consultation enables you to see whether Earfold® is right for you. Your surgeon will explain what Earfold® is, take a full medical history, then examine your ears and assess why they are prominent. It is important that you have realistic expectations and your surgeon will take time to explain whether Earfold® is able to deliver the results you expect. First you will have the opportunity to discuss how you feel about the current position of your ears. Then, by using temporary positioners (Pre-Fold) you get to choose how your ears will look. The use of temporary positioners to decide the final look of the ear is unique to Earfold®, and cannot easily be achieved with standard Otoplasty. There’s a lot to take in, so we recommend [...]

Can Sunscreen Prevent Cancer?

*  Stars

Can Sunscreen Prevent Cancer? Skin Cancer And The Dangers Cancer, in its simplest form, is an abnormal growth of cells within our body is that is beyond our control. Therefore, with skin cancer, this growth occurs within our skin cells and is most commonly caused by UV radiation from sunlight and sun beds that damages the DNA in our skin cells beyond repair. This damage then initiates mutations and genetic defects, and the formation of malignant lesions begin to occur due to rapid multiplication of skin cells. Sunscreens, Creams And Lotions As the UV rays in sunlight are one of the main causes of skin cancer, the importance of skin protection is higher than ever. Today’s Standards In Cosmetic Surgery

Today's Standards In Cosmetic Surgery New Standards For Surgeons It is a sad fact that there are a some plastic surgeons and clinics out there that seek to take advantage of vulnerable clients. They see the desperation that can so often come with such personal issues, the urgency and impatience of wanting to seek treatment as quickly as possible to correct the problem they have. They also see the strain that costly procedures can have on many clients and offer services at a much cheaper cost or use aggressive sales tactics in order to lure clients in. But this can often have very damaging consequences. Under-qualified surgeons and the treatments they provide can often be of a much lower standard than you would come to expect, risking undesirable results that can sometimes be disastrous. The risk of complications can be higher when going to a less experienced surgeon, and is [...]

Cinderella Lips For Summer

*  Stars

Cinderella Lips for Summer What Are Cinderella Lips? "Cinderella Lips" is the name given to a non-permanent lip treatment at Sthetix that produces fuller, plumper lips by using saline injections. These are injected into all areas of the lip and the inside of the mouth to create the desired look. This treatment is ideal for anyone that may be considering lip fillers but is perhaps hesitant to take the risk in case they don't like the outcome. This is because the results of the Cinderella Lips treatment only last around 6-8 hours. In a way, it is like a "try before you buy" treatment as you are not committing to a permanent procedure. It is popular among celebrities who wish to add volume to their lips for special events and appearances. Sunscreens, Creams And Lotions – What Is SPF And Does It Matter?

*  Stars

Sunscreens, creams and lotions - What is SPF and does it matter? Many of us don't fully understand the significance of the sun protection factor (SPF) in the cosmetics, skin care and sunscreen products that we use every day. The SPF in these items blocks the Ultra Violet B rays (UVB) in sunlight which cause sunburn, damages the skin and can contribute to causes of skin cancer. What Does SPF Mean? The SPF in a variety of products usually comes with a number. For example, the SPF found in most skin care creams and cosmetics is most commonly SPF 15. This means that where you might spend a minute in the sun before you start burning, now you can spend fifteen minutes before skin damage begins. However, if you are outside in bright sunlight you need to reapply sunscreen every two hours to maintain protection, but an SPF 15 in [...]

Laser Hair removal facts Reasons To Get Laser Hair Removal Current attitudes within our society towards bodily hair aren't that great. It is often seen as unsightly in most places - even more so for women - as we tirelessly strive for smooth, hairless skin. But this can be a constant battle of excessive shaving and waxing that becomes tiring and time-consuming. The Side Effects Of Dermal Fillers

*  Stars

Dermal Fillers Gone Wrong It is the same with any type of cosmetic procedure that you choose to undergo, there is usually minimum risk associated providing that you choose a reputable, qualified surgeon. In this case, the most common examples of dermal fillers "gone wrong" are when the patients perceive that they have not had enough due to under-treatment. This then leads to seeking further dermal fillers, which eventually leads to then having far too much. The results of this can appear extremely unnatural and, in some extreme cases, can even be life-threatening. Administering the fillers in the wrong places can cause skin to die entirely, but this is highly unlikely when you are in the capable hands of a professional surgeon. The best way to get ride of Spider Veins Who Gets Spider Veins And Why? This is a question we often get asked here at Sthetix Clinic in Liverpool, and it is one that doesn't have just one simple answer. The more professional term for the appearance of spider veins is "venous insufficiency" and is when our veins get bigger due to a backup of blood, which causes them to become varicose veins in more serious cases. But this is not the only thing that can cause spider veins. They can also be caused due to certain injuries, sun exposure and hormone changes. Spider Veins most commonly appear in the elderly due to weakening in vein valves over time, the overweight and obese due to the pressure put on the veins, and those who are pregnant as there is a lot of blood in the body during this time and [...]

Thread Veins On Our legs? Otherwise known as "Spider Veins" due to their almost cobweb-like appearance, thread veins can occur on any part of the body but are most commonly found in the face and legs. The main reason they appear is due to the smallest of our blood vessels, known as capillaries, rupturing following permanent dilation. This then causes the blood to spread to other capillaries and creates the undesirable appearance of thread veins on the skin. They tend to occur most commonly in the legs because of the pressure from our body weight and the fact that leg veins find it most difficult to carry blood from the bottom of the body back to the heart. Facelift Without Surgery

Facelift Without Surgery Does A Facelift Have To Be Permanent? It is no secret that with time it becomes ever more difficult to combat the signs of ageing on the skin. Unwanted wrinkles and creasing can knock your confidence and leave you unhappy with your overall appearance. This is why we sometimes look to cosmetic surgery as a permanent solution to a tough problem, but some of us might rush into a facelift without careful research and consideration of the risks involved with this type of surgery. If you neglect the quality of your treatment by choosing unsuitable clinics, surgeons or procedures then you risk "botched jobs" with the potential for scarring, infection, asymmetry and neurological dysfunction (to name a few issues). However, there are new alternative non-surgical facelifts that pose much fewer risks. What Is A Non-Surgical Facelift? A non-surgical facelift does not require the need to cut into [...]

Hair Transplant Overview The popularity of Hair Restoration treatments in recent years While it may seem as though hair restoration treatments are a fairly new cosmetic development, some of them have been around for quite some time. Although new treatments and products are being developed all the time, procedures like the hair transplant have actually been around for much longer. That said, with time, the results have become far better due to the development of better technology. Perhaps the influence of social media has had an effect on the popularity of this type of treatment, with celebrities like Jason Gardiner and Wayne Rooney being more than open about their treatments, giving others the confidence to seek the help they may have otherwise been too nervous to pursue. What to expect from a Hair Transplant A hair transplant procedure is most commonly used to address issues such as Alopecia, receding hairlines [...]

All You Need To Know About Thermage

*  Stars

All You Need To Know About Thermage What Is Thermage? Thermage is a non-invasive procedure that aims to maintain and slow the ageing process. You may find that this treatment also achieves a tighter skin, renews contours, smooth wrinkles and, most importantly, produces healthier collagen. These aesthetic improvements are achieved with a radiofrequency device that is passed over the face or body, with the tip in contact with the skin’s surface. Controlled radio waves from the device heat the deeper layers of the skin, stimulating new collagen development. Information On Thermage Treatment We use Thermage to combat the signs of premature ageing. Thermage is a non-invasive, non-surgical method of skin tightening and contouring through the use of FDA and CE approved radiofrequency (RF) technology. One of the main effects of ageing is collagen reduction, and so, with this latest technology, heat is delivered deep into the skin in order to [...]

Cinderella Lips, work very well for anyone who is wary of what their lips might look like if they were to try longer lasting dermal fillers. The Treatment The Cinderella Lips treatment is an injection of saline rather than dermal filler into the lips, cupid’s bow, philtrum columns, and even inside the mouth. The initial effect is the same, bigger and fuller lips but the Cinderella Lips treatment is named as such, because it only lasts 6 to 8 hours. An anaesthetic [...]

Labiaplasty – What’s That?

*  Stars

Labiaplasty – What’s That? Before I started working in a cosmetic surgery clinic, I had no idea that the procedure “labiaplasty” existed.  I now know that it’s a procedure which is becoming increasingly popular! Recently, while socialising with some friends, I mentioned that we do a whole range of surgeries, including labiaplasty. The response ranged from, “What’s that?” to “Why on earth would a woman want something like that?” I was left trying to explain that this is not always about looks. Why choose Labiaplasty? Labiaplasty is an option for a woman if she is concerned about the protrusion of the inner lips around the vaginal opening. This can be a purely aesthetic concern, such as embarrassment of the unevenness or asymmetry of the labia, but in the majority of cases, the reason is discomfort of the labia minora (inner lips of the vagina) during exercise, in certain tight clothes [...]

Going abroad for cosmetic surgery can be a big gamble. Inverted Nipple Correction

*  Stars

If you suffer from inverted nipples, you may feel that this is a source of embarrassment; it can cause difficulty in breast feeding and/or lead to hygiene problems as the area is difficult to clean. It is probably much more common than you think, affecting around 10% of the population – so you are certainly not alone. The condition can be congenital (i.e. you are born with the problem and it develops further as the breasts begin to grow), or acquired (i.e. after surgery or as a sign of another medical problem). If nipples become inverted over a short period of time (i.e. a few months) and especially associated with a blood stained discharge, you should seek urgent medical attention. Before considering inverted nipple correction surgery, you might want to try the non-surgical treatments such as the Niplette – a suction device which gently stretches the milk ducts over a [...]

Face Lift Jargon Explained

*  Stars

Face Lift Jargon - What's what? So, Mother Nature has finally won and when you look in the mirror, you can see what you have been dreading and avoiding for years – you’re ageing!!!  It’s inevitable: as we age, our facial and neck muscles loosen and the skin becomes slacker and loses its elasticity, creating folds, lines and wrinkles.  Years of sun exposure, the stresses of everyday life, gravity and smoking all begin to show on the face. However, before you get too despondent, there are a number of different types of facial cosmetic surgery procedures that can be carried out, which can refresh the face to create and provide a more alert, youthful appearance.  The best candidate for facelift surgery is a person whose skin still has some elasticity and who has a strong, well defined underlying bone structure. This tends to be people who are in their 40s [...]

Indented nipples after gynaecomastia surgery – Treatment with fat transfer

*  Stars

We recently received a letter from a man who was left with indented nipples (sunken) after surgery for gynaecomastia (male breasts). He wrote ‘I was always aware that I had man boobs since my twenties, this started to really affect me when my children started to grow as I found I could not go swimming with them or take my T shirt off on a beach. I finally plucked up the courage and went to a cosmetic company for treatment. I now feel worse than I did before the surgery as both my nipples are sunken as if I had a doughnut of fat around them. Can you help me please?’ An example of the correction of a saucer deformity/indented nipple using fat transfer Sunken nipples or saucer deformity is an unfortunate complication following male breast reduction surgery. This usually results from too much tissue being removed from [...]

To BAAPS or not to BAAPS?

Well, a while back I was asked a question by a prospective patient: “What is this BAAPS malarkey? Why should I see a BAAPS surgeon?”, she added. I was a little surprised and asked her to explain why she had asked that question. She said that while she was researching her procedure on the internet she came across recommendations that she should seek out a BAAPS or BAPRAS member surgeon. She then went on to make appointments at a number of well-known cosmetic surgery companies. To her surprise, when she asked if their surgeons were members of BAAPS and/or BAPRAS she was told they weren't and was given reasons like “our surgeons are cosmetic surgeons and don’t need to be members, anyone can be a member” or “anyone can pay the fees and be a member, it’s a money making scheme”. Well I wasn't surprised. Those providing this information are [...]

But, not to put a downer on things, it’s vital to remember the potentially harmful effects the sun’s rays can have on our skin. The sun can age our skin – we all know that – but most of us love the sun.  We feel happier when we see blue skies, our vitamin D levels are being given a boost and the same UV rays responsible for damaging our skin also help to release endorphins (“happy  hormones”).  We all seem to agree that a tan makes us look healthier and feel better about ourselves. However, the sun can also be our biggest enemy in the case of skin cancer – which is now the sixth most [...]

Sthetix’s response to the Review of the Regulation of Cosmetic Interventions Professor Sir Bruce Keogh KBE

“ One of my patients recently asked me ‘What is this BAAPS malarkey? What’s special about a BAAPS surgeon?’ She had researched cosmetic surgery online and read that it was important to check that your surgeon is a member of BAAPS and/or BAPRAS. She visited several cosmetic surgery clinics prior to our consultation and had been told by a salesperson at a well-known company that ‘Our surgeons are cosmetic surgeons and don’t need to be members of BAAPS and/or BAPRAS’ and that ‘Anyone can be a member, they only need to pay the fees’. It is shocking that the public are being so willfully misinformed by some companies in order to close a sale. Accreditation is not merely a membership of a club. The standards required in becoming an accredited member of BAAPS and/or BAPRAS are exceptionally high, requiring training, examinations, on-going practice and annual auditing well above the levels [...]

PIP Implants update

*  Stars

The Royal College of Surgeons of England have given authoritative new professional and patient guidance on the PIP controversy. The guidance goes beyond current government advice, which is aimed at patients with symptoms, and gives additional practical advice for the majority of patients who do not. The full guidance can be downloaded here.   Key Points from the guidance: All patients should be able to have an assessment by a surgeon regardless of whether they have symptoms. If a patient requests removal - they should expect to get this, regardless of the presence of any symptoms. If a patient wants time to make up their minds this should be respected - surgery to remove implants must not be a time-limited "take it or leave it" offer. Scans should only be used as a tool to assist patients make a decision and only take place after the patient has had a consultation with [...]

PIP Implants (update)

*  Stars

ISAPS (the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) have today announced their stance on the PIP controversy. They strongly support the French recommendation that breast implant patients check with their surgeon/hospital to find out if their implants were manufactured by the French company, Poly Implant Prosthesis (PIP). Even without signs of rupture, these implants should be removed or exchanged immediately to avoid further complications and risks. Mr Alvi, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Sthetix in Liverpool, and a member of ISAPS, strongly endorses their recommendation. A ruptured PIP implant, recently removed by Mr. Alvi Over the last 12 months Mr Alvi has removed or exchanged ruptured PIP implants in a large number of cases from other clinics including some from abroad.

PIP Implants

French authorities have today recommended that all PIP implants be removed as a precautionary measure, while also stating that there is no link to cancer. On the other hand, the UK's MHRA (the government agency which regulates the safety of medicines), has maintained the position that that there is no need for women with PIP implants to have them removed. Mr Alvi, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Sthetix Clinic Liverpool and Member of BAAPS has reiterated that if anyone with PIP implants is concerned, they should in the first instance, contact their initial provider. He added that as there is a well established risk of ruptures with PIP implants, any concerned women should consider an MRI scan. At Sthetix Clinic in Liverpool, we have dealt with a large number of problems related to PIP implants in the last year, most of which were ruptures.

Liverpool Plastic Surgeons show how cosmetic surgery is not always about vanity 09-11-2011, 9am – Consultant Plastic Surgeons from Sthetix Clinic in Liverpool appear in a new series on Discovery Real Time to illustrate the fact that, in most cases, cosmetic plastic surgery is to treat a physical or psychological problem - not Vanity. A review of the last 100 patients requesting a cosmetic surgery procedure at Sthetix Clinic has clearly illustrated this fact. 82% felt they had a physical and a psychological problem and a further 14% felt they had a psychological problem alone which they believe could be corrected by surgery. Only a small percentage (about 4%) felt they wanted surgery purely for vanity reasons. Discovery Real Time is currently running a series “My Naked Secret” on Sunday nights. This is highlighting the benefit successful cosmetic surgery and psychological help can have on people suffering from physical or [...]
