Our hospitals in Liverpool, Newton-le-Willows and Chester are all CQC registered and use state of the art equipment.
Who Is Suitable For Breast Enhancement?
Many of our patients choose breast augmentation after weight loss, breastfeeding or simply if they feel that their breasts are out of proportion. We like to get to you know you and what your aims are before the procedure so we ask that you meet with one of our highly skilled Consultant Plastic Surgeons to talk through what is safely and realistically achievable. We require all of our patients to be medically fit and psychologically stable to ensure your health and happiness.
If you suffer from excessive drooping or sagging of the breasts (breast ptosis), a breast uplift procedure (mastopexy) may be the best course of action for you and this can be done with or without augmentation (adding a breast implant). While most of our patients have completed their family (i.e. expect to have no more children) some are in a younger age group. You need to be over 18 for us to consider your request for surgery.
The choice of breast implant is a really important decision to make for this surgery. Across the board not all implants are of the same quality but at Sthetix we only use Allergan Natrelle®, Nagor Impleo® and Mentor®, arguably some of the highest quality and most advanced implants available. Your wellbeing is our top priority and we do not use cheaper or lower quality implants under any circumstance.
All implants used at Sthetix come with a lifetime guarantee against rupture - the Mentor® and Nagor Impleo® implants also guarantee against capsular contracture for upto 10 years from date of surgery. Ask your surgeon for more details about what this means.
This can seem like a lot of information to consider and this is why our dedicated team are always on hand to provide additional information and advice (click here to ask us a question).
You may already have a desired size or shape in mind or you may be a little unsure. In either case, we’d like to sit down with you to discuss your goals and expectations and give you right guidance to help you make make a decision that is best for you. All of our consultations take place with Consultant Plastic Surgeons who have a wealth of experience and knowledge. During the consultation period (we always do at least 2 consultations), we will give you enough time to discuss and ask any questions you may have. If you’re still unsure, we can offer multiple consultations (at no extra cost) to give you the opportunity and time to make the right decision.
Usually, we can increase the breast size to the size specified by the patient (within safe limits of course), however bra cup sizes aren’t always a reliable measure of breast size. Most stores offer very different sizing and even with professional sizing, bra manufacturers often don’t agree on what constitutes a specific cup size. As a result, there’s no way of guaranteeing a specific cup size following breast augmentation but we make every effort to help you achieve the size you’re looking for.
After surgery, the size of the breasts will be the size of the original breast plus the size of the implant. We have introduced an innovative 3D system CRISALIX, which can help you to visualise the result related to different size and shape of implants. Remember that this system is an approximation.
Under or over the muscle?
Implants can either be placed under or over the chest muscle. There tends to be a lot of misinformation about this online but to clarify, the position of the implant doesn’t have a significant effect on the final appearance, nor does it affect the risk of capsular contracture.
This decision is important so that the risk of rippling is reduced. If the implant is too close to the skin, the skin can ripple so it’s better to have more padding between the surface of the implant and the skin.
For this reason, our Consultant Plastic Surgeons will assess you on an individual basis, take your preference into account and provide guidance and recommendations. However, you will have the final say on this matter.
A subglandular placement of a breast implant (over the muscle) where the upper part of the breast has very thin tissue, resulting in rippling
A submuscular placement of a breast implant (under the muscle) where the upper part of the breast has very thin tissue. The thicker muscle prevents the implant edge from showing through the skin (rippling)
There are many shape options to choose from and implants are available in round and tear drop (anatomical) shapes. We will work with you to help you achieve your desired shape but the final results depend on many things such as your current breast shape, chest wall shape and the implants used. These things will be discussed in depth during your consultation. In the case of drooping or asymmetry, we may recommend additional procedures.
Before Breast Enlargement Surgery
Before breast enlargement surgery, there are several things we require so that your procedure goes as smoothly as possible.
One of the most important things is to stop smoking as smoke introduces toxins into the blood that can increase the risk of healing problems, skin loss and complications. We also ask that smokers stop at least 6 weeks before their surgery date and don’t start again until wounds have completely healed.
We also ask patients who are undergoing this procedure to stop taking oral contraceptive pills (alternative methods are fine), aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs. This is because some of those pills can increase the risk of bleeding. And finally, we ask that patients do not take off-the-shelf herbal medicines or nutritional supplements.
To ensure that you are fully prepared for the surgery, we will ask you to attend a medical examination at a pre-operative assessment clinic where certain tests may be carried out to ensure your safety during anaesthesia and surgery.
The Procedure And Risks
This surgery is carried out under a general anaesthetic and requires an overnight stay in hospital.
Breast augmentation involves making a small incision (usually underneath the breast) and opening a pocket in the breast tissue where the implant is then inserted. The incision is then closed up using dissolvable stitches. This procedure usually takes around an hour or less and is relatively safe.
The most common cause of dissatisfaction is if a patient’s expectations did not meet what can be realistically and safely achieved. For this reason, we try and get to know you before the procedure and talk to you about the results you expect and what we can work together to achieve.
After breast augmentation surgery, patients can experience slight discomfort, swelling and bruising, however our surgeons will do everything possible to ensure your comfort after the procedure. As with any surgery, potential risks include: haematoma, infection, wide or lumpy scars, asymmetry, ALCL, altered sensation, visible rippling, persistent pain, capsular contracture and implant rupture.
Aftercare And Guarantee
As your wellbeing is our number one priority, we offer a comprehensive and personalised aftercare package all included in your treatment.
After you are discharged, will we give you post-operative care instructions and you will have 24-hour access to trained staff who will be on hand to advise you should you have any questions or concerns.
After the surgery, we will arrange appointments for follow-up examinations with your surgeon to monitor your progress and check that you are recovering well (it usually takes 2-3 weeks to recover and heal from this procedure.
2 weeks after surgery, one of our trained staff will see you and check your wounds. Your surgeon will see you after 6 weeks for a follow-up and again after that until you are fully recovered. These follow-ups are standard and will be provided at no extra cost.
In the unlikely event of a problem, we will make arrangements for you to be seen by trained staff and (if needed), by the surgeon who performed the procedure. As all our surgeons live and work in the local area, it is possible to see your surgeon at relatively short notice. Our surgeons don’t leave the country or the local area after performing the surgery. If, on a rare occasion, a surgeon leaves the local area due to other commitments, we will ensure that there will always be another trained plastic surgeon from our team available to provide you with comprehensive care.
In the unlikely event of a complication directly related to your surgery, we would provide or arrange further surgery and/or treatment at no extra cost.
In the unlikely event of a complication directly related to your breast enlargement surgery, we will provide or arrange further surgery and/or treatment (if needed) at no extra cost for up to 1 year.
Will I have scars?
The scars are in or near the crease under the breasts. At first they are red and usually take 6-12 months to mature.
What is the recovery period?
The recovery period varies but for most women it takes 2 to 3 weeks.
When can I drive a car?
We recommend you avoid driving or operating heavy machinery for 2 weeks after your surgery.
When can I go back to work?
This depends on your type of work but most people find they can go back to work any time between 2 to 3 weeks after the surgery.
When can I exercise?
Upper body exercises can be gradually started after 6 weeks, while gentle lower body exercises (e.g. a relaxed walk) are recommended as soon as you are comfortable.
Can I breast feed?
In most cases, breastfeeding is possible after breast augmentation. However it’s important to note that generally in the population, some women are naturally unable to breastfeed. The presence of implants is not related to the ability to breastfeed.
