A Healthy Lifestyle Before undergoing any surgical procedure, you should make sure that your body is in as healthy a state as possible. As we age, our bodies slowly deteriorate in a variety of ways, which can lead to changes in our physical appearance. Skin loses its elasticity, which can lead to sagging, wrinkles and creases, especially around our face and neck. It is a daily battle with issues such as crows feet, laugh lines and droopy jowls. Not only this, but years of sun exposure can lead to dry skin and age spots. Prevention & Skin Care Treatments For Anti-Ageing While our skin may suffer, and show for it, over time, there are ways in which you can care for your skin and prevent some of the issues we face. Get Hair-Free And Care-Free This Summer

*  Stars

Half Way Through Summer In the UK, we have enjoyed a couple of summer months now; with longer days, shorter nights and warmer weather (when we are lucky). As the sun comes out and the heat bares down, our skin is covered less as we battle to stay cool. With more of ourselves on show, we can become self-conscious and more aware of our outward appearance, making it a daily struggle to maintain our bodies and keep them tidy, especially our unwanted body hair. Hair Removal At Home There are many products on the high street that many of us turn to when it comes to the removal of our unsightly body hair, such as hair removal creams, home waxing kits and razors, all of which can be extremely tiresome. While these can work for many of us, amateur hair removal can have some unwanted outcomes. You may not be [...]

Whether that be sunburn, dry skin or the worst case scenario, skin cancer. Cinderella Lips

*  Stars

Cinderella Lips What are “Cinderella Lips”? If you are toying with the idea of lip fillers but have concerns about what you would look like with a fuller pout, then Cinderella Lips may be the answer. Most people considering lip fillers have concerns that their lips will look overdone and are afraid that they may be left with a “trout pout” for at least 3 months! Cinderella Lips, work very well for anyone who is wary of what their lips might look like if they were to try longer lasting dermal fillers. The Treatment The Cinderella Lips treatment is an injection of saline rather than dermal filler into the lips, cupid’s bow, philtrum columns, and even inside the mouth. The initial effect is the same, bigger and fuller lips but the Cinderella Lips treatment is named as such, because it only lasts 6 to 8 hours. An anaesthetic [...]

“Mummy Makeover”

*  Stars

Becoming a mum can be one of the most rewarding experiences of a woman’s life; however, pregnancy and breast-feeding often result in unwanted changes in a woman's body, such as changes to the size and shape of breasts, stretch marks, and a sagging tummy that no amount of exercise and dieting seem to fix. I was recently introduced to the term “Mummy Makeover” by one of my patients. The term commonly refers to a combination of surgical procedures such as a tummy tuck, breast lift and augmentation and liposuction that help women restore their post-pregnancy bodies. Considering multiple major surgeries (possibly in one sitting) is a significant undertaking with weeks of downtime and a considerable investment. Needless to say, do your research: Check out a number of surgeons. I recommend you initially use information available on the internet, including reviews, to research 2 or 3 surgeons. Make sure they are [...]

Labiaplasty – What’s That?

*  Stars

Before I started working in a cosmetic surgery clinic, I had no idea that the procedure “labiaplasty” existed.  I now know that it’s a procedure which is becoming increasingly popular! Recently, while socialising with some friends, I mentioned that we do a whole range of surgeries, including labiaplasty. The response ranged from, “What’s that?” to “Why on earth would a woman want something like that?” I was left trying to explain that this is not always about looks. Why choose Labiaplasty? Labiaplasty is an option for a woman if she is concerned about the protrusion of the inner lips around the vaginal opening. This can be a purely aesthetic concern, such as embarrassment of the unevenness or asymmetry of the labia, but in the majority of cases, the reason is discomfort of the labia minora (inner lips of the vagina) during exercise, in certain tight clothes and during sex.  Sometimes, [...]

Considering having cosmetic surgery abroad? Think again…

*  Stars

Going abroad for cosmetic surgery can be a big gamble. People are often prepared to take that “gamble” as it can prove cheaper than having surgery here in the UK and patients are, in the main, attracted by the cheaper cost. Cosmetic surgery is a major undertaking and should not be sold as part of a package holiday deal.

Inverted Nipple Correction

*  Stars

If you suffer from inverted nipples, you may feel that this is a source of embarrassment; it can cause difficulty in breast feeding and/or lead to hygiene problems as the area is difficult to clean. It is probably much more common than you think, affecting around 10% of the population – so you are certainly not alone. The condition can be congenital (i.e. you are born with the problem and it develops further as the breasts begin to grow), or acquired (i.e. after surgery or as a sign of another medical problem). If nipples become inverted over a short period of time (i.e. a few months) and especially associated with a blood stained discharge, you should seek urgent medical attention. Before considering inverted nipple correction surgery, you might want to try the non-surgical treatments such as the Niplette – a suction device which gently stretches the milk ducts over a [...]

Face Lift Jargon Explained

*  Stars

Face Lift Jargon - What's what? So, Mother Nature has finally won and when you look in the mirror, you can see what you have been dreading and avoiding for years – you’re ageing!!!  It’s inevitable: as we age, our facial and neck muscles loosen and the skin becomes slacker and loses its elasticity, creating folds, lines and wrinkles.  Years of sun exposure, the stresses of everyday life, gravity and smoking all begin to show on the face. However, before you get too despondent, there are a number of different types of facial cosmetic surgery procedures that can be carried out, which can refresh the face to create and provide a more alert, youthful appearance.  The best candidate for facelift surgery is a person whose skin still has some elasticity and who has a strong, well defined underlying bone structure. This tends to be people who are in their 40s [...]

To BAAPS or not to BAAPS?

*  Stars

Well, a while back I was asked a question by a prospective patient: “What is this BAAPS malarkey? Why should I see a BAAPS surgeon?”, she added. I was a little surprised and asked her to explain why she had asked that question. She said that while she was researching her procedure on the internet she came across recommendations that she should seek out a BAAPS or BAPRAS member surgeon. She then went on to make appointments at a number of well-known cosmetic surgery companies. To her surprise, when she asked if their surgeons were members of BAAPS and/or BAPRAS she was told they weren't and was given reasons like “our surgeons are cosmetic surgeons and don’t need to be members, anyone can be a member” or “anyone can pay the fees and be a member, it’s a money making scheme”. Well I wasn't surprised. Those providing this information are [...]

The Mole Shebang

*  Stars

So, winter is finally behind us and you’re probably enjoying this glorious sunshine which has, no doubt, put a smile on your face, lifted your spirits and given you a bounce in your stride. But, not to put a downer on things, it’s vital to remember the potentially harmful effects the sun’s rays can have on our skin. The sun can age our skin – we all know that – but most of us love the sun.  We feel happier when we see blue skies, our vitamin D levels are being given a boost and the same UV rays responsible for damaging our skin also help to release endorphins (“happy  hormones”).  We all seem to agree that a tan makes us look healthier and feel better about ourselves. However, the sun can also be our biggest enemy in the case of skin cancer – which is now the sixth most [...]
