What Causes Sunburn & How To Prevent It

Symptoms Of Sunburn

The symptoms of sunburn can include:

  • Redness and blistering of the skin
  • Some pain and tingling sensations
  • Headache and dehydration
  • Swelling
  • Dizziness and nausea
  • Fever and chills. The symptoms you experience will depend on the severity of your condition. In some severe cases, sunburn can also be known as sun poisoning.

What Is Sunburn?

sunburn causesIn its literal definition, sunburn is a “reddening, inflammation, and, in some severe cases, blistering and peeling of the skin caused by overexposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun”. However, not everyone happens to suffer from sunburn following prolonged exposure to the sun and instead tan, much to the envy of those that don’t.

You might have wondered why this happens and why people react differently to the sun. It simply comes down to genetics as our individual ability to either tan or burn is inherited. For example, those with fairer skin are usually the ones to burn whereas those with darker skin possess more melanin which allows them to tan due to the extra protection from the sun. This doesn’t, however, mean that they are immune from sunburn.

Treatment For Sunburn

There are a range of treatments available for sunburn, which again vary depending on the severity of the burn.

These include:

  • The application of cool towel compresses to the affected area
  • The application of cool milk to the affected area
  • Using “after suncream” and sprays
  • Using hydrocortisone cream
  • Taking pain relief medication such as naproxen or ibuprofen
  • Drinking plenty of fluids
  • The application of Vaseline
  • Special burn creams and dressings

How To Avoid Sunburn

  • Wear suitable clothing that covers the skin
  • Use sunscreen of a high SPF factor (at least SPF15 but higher factors are advised) and that blocks both UVA and UVB radiation. This is very important as it both protects you now and prevents future sun damage
  • Simply don’t spend too much time out in the sun if you can help it.
