Indented Nipples after Gynaecomastia
We recently received a letter from a man who was left with indented nipples (sunken) after surgery for gynaecomastia (male breasts). He wrote ‘I was always aware that I had man boobs since my twenties, this started to really affect me when my children started to grow as I found I could not go swimming with them or take my T shirt off on a beach. I finally plucked up the courage and went to a cosmetic company for treatment. I now feel worse than I did before the surgery as both my nipples are sunken as if I had a doughnut of fat around them. Can you help me please?’
What Causes Indented Nipples Following Gynaecomastia?
Sunken nipples or saucer deformity is an unfortunate complication following male breast reduction surgery. This usually results from too much tissue being removed from under the nipple areola or sometimes not enough being removed around the nipple, coupled with the nipple adhering to the underlying muscle tissues. Sometimes, it is a result of all three.
This can be corrected either by addition of tissue under the nipple by fat transfer or removal of excess tissue around the nipple, with or without a release of the ‘tethered’ nipple from the muscle below. Occasionally a combination of all three are required.
