Before I started working in a cosmetic surgery clinic, I had no idea that the procedure “labiaplasty” existed. I now know that it’s a procedure which is becoming increasingly popular!
Recently, while socialising with some friends, I mentioned that we do a whole range of surgeries, including labiaplasty. The response ranged from, “What’s that?” to “Why on earth would a woman want something like that?” I was left trying to explain that this is not always about looks.
Why choose Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is an option for a woman if she is concerned about the protrusion of the inner lips around the vaginal opening. This can be a purely aesthetic concern, such as embarrassment of the unevenness or asymmetry of the labia, but in the majority of cases, the reason is discomfort of the labia minora (inner lips of the vagina) during exercise, in certain tight clothes and during sex. Sometimes, a labiaplasty can be requested after tears in the labia minora following childbirth.
It’s important to remember that a woman doesn’t need a labiaplasty if she doesn’t have problems associated with the inner lips of the vagina. All surgeries carry potential risks and this surgery is certainly no different.
We often find that perception of what is normal can be confusing for a patient and just as we all have different colour hair or are different heights the same applies to what women look like “down below”. The majority of us are within the “normal
range”, and this varies greatly – but in most cases, we are able to reassure patients that their labia are nothing out of the ordinary. However, that is not to say, that if a woman is suffering embarrassment and/or pain then a labiaplasty procedure may provide the answer.
A woman considering labiaplasty surgery would be well advised to find an experienced plastic or gynaecological surgeon who specialises in this type of surgery and to contact him/her for advice and further information. In the North-West, this can be provided at Sthetix Clinic by surgeons who have years of experience in this procedure.
Since starting working at Sthetix Cosmetic Clinic I have realised one thing – choose your surgeon and clinic carefully.
