“Mummy Makeover”

“Mummy Makeover”

Mother and babyBecoming a mum can be one of the most rewarding experiences of a woman’s life; however, pregnancy and breast-feeding often result in unwanted changes in a woman’s body, such as changes to the size and shape of breasts, stretch marks, and a sagging tummy that no amount of exercise and dieting seem to fix.

I was recently introduced to the term “Mummy Makeover” by one of my patients. The term commonly refers to a combination of surgical procedures such as a tummy tuck, breast lift and augmentation and liposuction that help women restore their post-pregnancy bodies.

Considering multiple major surgeries (possibly in one sitting) is a significant undertaking with weeks of downtime and a considerable investment. Needless to say, do your research:

  1. Check out a number of surgeons.
I recommend you initially use information available on the internet, including reviews, to research 2 or 3 surgeons. Make sure they are BAAPS members.
  2. Check out the hospitals where they operate.
Check that your surgical procedure will be carried out in a fully regulated hospital and ask about aftercare.
  3. Ensure your consultation is with the plastic surgeon and not a sales person.
Following your surgeries, you will have a few weeks of recovery and healing ahead of you. Make sure you are well prepared.
  • Arrange for help including child care
  • Talk to your partner and close friends and relatives
  • Take and follow advice given to you by the doctor
  • Stop any unnecessary medication
  • Stop SMOKING
  • Arrange for 2-3 weeks off work (preferably 3)

This combination of procedures when done for the right reasons can be life changing. Try to have realistic expectations and remember it may take weeks to recover fully.
