An Education On Melanocytic Naevi

An Education On Melanocytic Naevi

How & Why Do Moles Develop?

More of us have moles than those that don’t, and there are numerous different types of moles; some harmless while some can be very dangerous indeed. Moles form when skin cells don’t grow as they should. Instead of growing evenly spread across the skin, sometimes skin cells grown in clusters which causes moles to appear.

You are more likely to get moles if you possess fair skin rather than those of us with darker skin and moles can also develop if they are common within your family. The most common types of mole include junctional melanocytic naevi, dermal melanocytic naevi and compound melanocytic naevi. There are also rarer types of mole including halo naevi, blue naevi and atypical naevi.

The Importance Of Checking Your Skin

While most moles  are usually completely harmless, some can develop into a serious form of skin cancer known as Melanoma. For this reason, it is very important to regularly check your skin.

Check existing moles to see if there have been any changes in things such as size, colour and texture, while also checking for the appearance of any new moles. All of these can be signs of developing skin cancer, but not always. There are ways to try and prevent the formation of cancerous moles, particularly when you are exposed to sunlight for prolonged amounts of time.

It is the UV rays in sunlight that is harmful to our skin and we need to stay protected from them. Be sure to always use sunscreen with a high SPF, cover up exposed skin when possible and try to stay in the shade in strong sunlight – sunlight is at its strongest between 11am and 3pm. Also, try to avoid using tanning beds as the UV rays from them can be very harmful to the skin.

Procedures Related To Moles

If you require the removal of a mole, whether that be for medical reasons or personal preference, there are numerous methods in which to do this. The most common methods used are: surgical excision, laser removal and natural removal, depending on the type of mole. Surgical methods include shaving for raised moles, punch biopsies for smaller moles and excisional surgery for malignant moles.

Laser mole removal slowly removes the mole tissue over a number of treatments and is best for flat moles. Then there are natural methods that require creams found on the highstreet that slowly kill the mole until it falls off, leaving minimal scarring, but this is not a method we would advise at Sthetix Clinic.
