Sunscreens, Creams And Lotions – What Is SPF And Does It Matter?

Sunscreens, creams and lotions – What is SPF and does it matter?

Many of us don’t fully understand the significance of the sun protection factor (SPF) in the cosmetics, skin care and sunscreen products that we use every day. The SPF in these items blocks the Ultra Violet B rays (UVB) in sunlight which cause sunburn, damages the skin and can contribute to causes of skin cancer.

What Does SPF Mean?

SPFThe SPF in a variety of products usually comes with a number. For example, the SPF found in most skin care creams and cosmetics is most commonly SPF 15. This means that where you might spend a minute in the sun before you start burning, now you can spend fifteen minutes before skin damage begins.

However, if you are outside in bright sunlight you need to reapply sunscreen every two hours to maintain protection, but an SPF 15 in your moisturising cream will adequately protect you for the day if you are only spending a little time outside.

Why Do We Need To Wear An SPF?

Most dermatologists will agree that we need to wear an SPF of 30 every day, even when it’s cloudy or raining! This is because UVB is actually radiation from the sun which penetrates our atmosphere, even when the daylight doesn’t appear to be bright or it doesn’t feel very hot. The photons in the UVB light penetrate the skin and cause cumulative damage, which contributes to premature ageing and wrinkles.

An SPF protection on your exposed skin will greatly reduce the number of photons your skin absorbs and therefore slow down the adverse effect of sun exposure.
