Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

Everyone experiences a degree of hair loss in their lives. Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) is one of a range of treatment options available to restore hair growth and improve quality of hair. It is suitable for both men and women, and can be used in the treatment of hair loss and hair thinning.

What is PRP Treatment?

Your blood contains cells called platelets which are packed with growth factors (proteins) that help regeneration. PRP is a non-surgical treatment these cells from your own blood that is injected, under local anaesthetic, into the area of the scalp being treated. The growth factors that are delivered start a process of regenerating the hair follicles to stimulate hair growth both in terms of volume and quality of hair. PRP can be used on its own or in conjunction with other techniques such as hair transplant. Your surgeon will discuss the most appropriate course of treatment(s) for you.

Your surgeon will take a small sample of your blood. This is put through a device called a centrifuge, where the blood components are separated to extract the platelet rich plasma. This is injected under local anaesthetic, at multiple points in the area of hair loss using a fine needle. Most patients report minimum discomfort both during and after the procedure.

How many sessions will I need?

On an average new patients have three treatments, at 4 to 6 week intervals. Further treatments are subject to the quality of response, general treatment plan and patient choice. Some patients choose to have an annual treatment thereafter, to maintain their results.

Results after PRP are not visible straight away. Results may vary in quality but usually start becoming evident from 3 months and up to a year. The final outcome will vary from person to person.

Return to work

PRP is a minimally invasive procedure and you may experience some slight discomfort afterwards. However, most patients return to work the next day.

After care

After care following PRP is uncomplicated. You will be given detailed instructions at the clinic, which cover medications, washing and returning to daily activities etc.
