Many women want significantly larger breasts that are proportional and balanced for their body type. Deciding on the size and shape is a good place to start, but what about what the implants are made of? Not all implants are the same, and what’s right for one person may not be a good fit for you.

Choosing which breast implant you want is an important decision and ultimately based on personal preference. The UK qualified GMC consultant plastic surgeons at Sthetix can help you find the right fit to ensure you achieve beautiful cleavage that doesn’t appear augmented.

There are two main implant types for women considering breast augmentation: saline and silicone. Before we discuss what makes them different, let’s go over what they have in common.

Breast Implant Shells

Implants come in one of two shells:

  • Smooth implants feel the softest and usually move more naturally.
  • Textured implants are less likely to move around inside the breast because the scar tissue that develops sticks to the implant.

Both saline and silicone implants are available in a wide range of sizes and profiles.

Breast Implant Shapes

Whether you choose a silicone or saline implant, it will come in a medical-grade silicone rubber shell, and either a round or teardrop shape. Round implants are symmetrical in shape and have a fuller appearance. More commonly known as a gummy bear implant, teardrop implants are form-stable and less likely to shift over time.

Saline Implants

Saline implants are typically filled after placement with a sterile saltwater solution (saline), which allows for smaller incisions and less prominent scarring. These implants are typically fuller and provide a rounder shape to your breasts. Since they tend to ripple over time, saline implants are often positioned submuscular (below the breast muscle) for a more natural look and feel.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants are prefilled with silicone gel. The gel moves more naturally than saline when placed above the muscle. Placement of these implants requires slightly longer incisions because they are already prefilled to your desired shape and size. These may be more suitable for women with limited breast tissue. For more than 20 years, silicone implants have continued to be a favourite among many women.
